Baccarat is the preferred game of casino high rollers worldwide. In Macau, it generates more revenue than all other table games combined. And despite its glamorous reputation, it's one of the simplest games in the casino, and one of the best bets.
The rules are straightforward: two hands are dealt: Player and Banker. Each hand gets two cards, with a possible third card drawn according to fixed rules. The hand closest to 9 wins. You bet on Player, Banker, or Tie before the cards are dealt. That's it, with no decisions after the bet is placed.
THE MATH: Banker wins 45.86% of the time, Player wins 44.62%, and Tie occurs 9.52%. Excluding ties (which push on Player and Banker bets), Banker wins 50.68% and Player wins 49.32%. The banker hand has a slight edge because of the third-card drawing rules because the Banker hand acts second and can make decisions based on the Player's third card.

House edges: Banker bet = 1.06% (after 5% commission on wins), Player bet = 1.24%, Tie bet = 14.36%. The choice is clear: always bet Banker. The 5% commission on Banker wins might seem like it negates the advantage, but even after the commission, Banker has a lower house edge than Player.
THE TIE BET TRAP: The Tie bet pays 8:1 (or 9:1 at some tables), which looks attractive. But with a 14.36% house edge, it's one of the worst bets in the casino. For comparison, even American roulette (5.26%) is nearly three times better. Never bet on Tie.
DO BACCARAT PATTERNS WORK? Many players track results on scorecards, looking for patterns like streaks, zigzags, and dragons. This is pure gambler's fallacy. Each hand is independent; the previous results have zero influence on the next hand. The shoe doesn't have memory. Pattern tracking is entertainment, not strategy.
CARD COUNTING IN BACCARAT: Unlike blackjack, card counting in baccarat provides almost no useful advantage. The effect of removed cards on baccarat outcomes is minimal. A perfect count might give you a 0.01% edge in extremely rare situations. It's not worth the effort.
BANKROLL MANAGEMENT: Since there's no strategy beyond 'bet Banker,' the only variable you control is how much you bet. A conservative approach: bet 1-2% of your bankroll per hand, and set a stop-loss of 30-40% of your session bankroll. Baccarat has relatively low variance for even-money bets, so your bankroll should be relatively stable.
The optimal baccarat strategy fits on one line: bet Banker every hand, ignore patterns, never bet Tie, manage your bankroll, and enjoy the elegance of the game. There's nothing more to it.
