Understanding House Edge
The house edge is the single most important number in casino gambling. It represents the mathematical advantage built into every game: the percentage of each bet that the casino expects to keep over millions of plays. A 2% house edge doesn't mean you lose 2% of your bets; it means that on average, for every $100 wagered, the casino keeps $2 and returns $98.
This calculator lets you compare the cost of different bets side by side. The difference between a 0.5% house edge (blackjack with basic strategy) and a 5.26% house edge (American roulette) is enormous over time. At $25 per bet and 60 bets per hour, that's the difference between losing $7.50/hour and losing $79/hour.
Use this tool to make informed decisions about which games and bets give you the best mathematical odds. While the house always has an edge (except for the Craps Odds bet at 0%), choosing lower-edge games significantly extends your playing time and reduces your expected losses.

| Blackjack (basic strategy) | 0.50% | $0.50 |
| Baccarat: Banker | 1.06% | $1.06 |
| Craps: Pass Line | 1.41% | $1.41 |
| Roulette: European | 2.70% | $2.70 |
| Roulette: American | 5.26% | $5.26 |
| Slots (typical) | 4-15% | $4-$15 |
FAQ
What is house edge in casino games?
House edge is the mathematical advantage the casino has over the player, expressed as a percentage of each bet. A 2% house edge means the casino expects to keep $2 for every $100 wagered over the long run. Different games and bets within games have different house edges. Blackjack with basic strategy has 0.5%, while American roulette has 5.26%.
Which casino game has the lowest house edge?
Blackjack with perfect basic strategy offers the lowest house edge at around 0.5%. Video poker (full-pay Jacks or Better) is close at 0.46%. Baccarat's Banker bet at 1.06% and Craps' Pass Line with odds at effectively 0.37% are also excellent. The Craps Odds bet has a 0% house edge, the only zero-edge bet in the casino.
Does bet size affect the house edge?
No. The house edge is a fixed mathematical property of each bet, regardless of how much you wager. Betting $5 or $500 on roulette red gives you the same 2.7% (European) or 5.26% (American) house edge. However, larger bets mean larger absolute losses over time.
How is house edge different from RTP?
House edge and RTP (Return to Player) are two sides of the same coin: RTP = 100% - House Edge. A slot with 96% RTP has a 4% house edge. RTP tells you what percentage of money is returned to players; house edge tells you what percentage the casino keeps.
