French Roulette

Definition

A roulette variant with the same single-zero wheel as European roulette but featuring the la partage or en prison rules on even-money bets. Offers the lowest house edge in roulette at 1.35% on even-money wagers.

French roulette is a variation that uses the same single-zero wheel as European roulette but adds the la partage or en prison rule on even-money bets. These rules reduce the house edge from 2.70% to 1.35% on red/black, odd/even, and high/low wagers, making it the most player-friendly version of roulette available.

The French roulette table layout differs visually from European and American tables. The betting area uses French terminology (Manque/Passe for low/high, Pair/Impair for even/odd, Rouge/Noir for red/black) and the layout is arranged horizontally rather than vertically. Some French roulette games also offer announced bets (voisins du zéro, tiers du cylindre, orphelins) that cover specific sections of the wheel.

The announced bets in French roulette allow you to bet on groups of numbers based on their physical position on the wheel rather than their position on the table layout. Voisins du zéro covers 17 numbers around the zero on the wheel. Tiers du cylindre covers 12 numbers on the opposite side. These bets do not change the house edge but offer a different way to distribute your wagers.

When available, French roulette should be your first choice at any casino. The 1.35% house edge on even-money bets is among the best you will find in any casino game. Even inside bets and non-even-money bets have the standard 2.70% European house edge, which is still significantly better than American roulette's 5.26%.
