Basic strategy is the single most important thing you can learn as a blackjack player. It's a set of rules that tells you the mathematically optimal play for every possible combination of your hand and the dealer's upcard. Follow it perfectly, and you reduce the house edge from roughly 2% (for an average player) to just 0.5%.
This isn't gambling advice or a hunch. Basic strategy was developed through computer simulations of billions of blackjack hands. Every decision in the chart maximizes your expected return (or minimizes your expected loss) based on the exact probabilities of every possible outcome. There is no better play than what basic strategy recommends.
HARD HANDS (no Ace, or Ace counts as 1): Always stand on hard 17 or higher because the risk of busting outweighs any potential gain. Always hit on hard 8 or lower because you can't bust, and any card improves your hand. Double down on hard 11 against dealer 2-10 (this is one of the most profitable plays in blackjack). Double on hard 10 against dealer 2-9. Stand on hard 12 against dealer 4-6 (the dealer's bust zone), hit against everything else. Stand on hard 13-16 against dealer 2-6, hit against 7 or higher.

SOFT HANDS (Ace counted as 11): Always stand on soft 19 (A-8) or higher. Always hit or double on soft 17 (A-6) or lower against dealer 5-6 (double if allowed, otherwise hit). Hit soft 17 against dealer 7 or higher. Double soft 18 (A-7) against dealer 3-6, stand against 2, 7, 8, hit against 9, 10, Ace.
PAIRS: Always split Aces because two chances at 21 is far better than one hand totaling 12. Always split 8s because hard 16 is the worst hand in blackjack, but two hands starting with 8 are playable. Never split 10s because hard 20 is too strong to break up. Never split 5s. Treat them as hard 10 and double down. Split 2s, 3s, and 7s against dealer 2-7. Split 4s only against dealer 5-6. Split 6s against dealer 2-6. Split 9s against dealer 2-6, 8-9 (stand against 7, 10, Ace).
SURRENDER: If the casino offers late surrender, use it in exactly two situations: surrender hard 16 (but not a pair of 8s) against dealer 9, 10, or Ace, and surrender hard 15 against dealer 10. Surrender saves you money in the worst situations by giving up half your bet instead of playing a hand you'll lose more than half the time.
The most common mistakes players make: standing on soft 17 (you should always hit because you literally cannot bust a soft hand), not doubling on 11 against a dealer 10, splitting 10s when the dealer shows a 5 or 6 (never do this since 20 wins far more often than two random hands), and taking insurance (the house edge on insurance is 7.4%, one of the worst bets in the casino).
How much does basic strategy actually save you? Consider a player making $25 bets, 80 hands per hour. Without basic strategy (average player, ~2% edge), expected loss = $40/hour. With perfect basic strategy (0.5% edge), expected loss = $10/hour. That's $30/hour saved, or $240 over an 8-hour session. Over a year of weekend play, basic strategy saves thousands of dollars.
The hardest part of basic strategy isn't learning it, but trusting it. There will be times when the chart tells you to hit 12 against a dealer 3, and you'll bust, and the table will groan. But remember: you're playing the mathematically optimal long game. Any single hand can go either way, but over thousands of hands, basic strategy guarantees the lowest possible house edge.
