Split
Definition
A blackjack option available when dealt a pair (two cards of equal value). You split them into two separate hands, each with its own bet. Always split Aces and 8s; never split 10s or 5s.
Splitting in blackjack is an option available when you are dealt two cards of equal value. You place a second bet equal to your original wager, and each card becomes the starting card of a separate hand. You then play each hand independently, hitting, standing, or doubling as basic strategy dictates.
Some splits are non-negotiable in basic strategy. Always split Aces because you get two chances to hit 21 with a 10-value card. Always split 8s because a hard 16 is the worst possible hand, but two 8s give you two chances at a strong hand. Never split 10s because a 20 is already an excellent hand. Never split 5s because a hard 10 is a great doubling opportunity.
The remaining pairs require nuanced decision-making based on the dealer's upcard. Split 2s, 3s, 6s, and 7s against weak dealer cards (2 through 7 for 2s and 3s, 2 through 6 for 6s and 7s). Split 4s only against dealer 5 or 6 (and only if doubling after splitting is allowed). Split 9s against everything except dealer 7, 10, and Ace.
Re-splitting (splitting a pair that appears after an initial split) is allowed at many casinos and is a player-favorable rule. Aces are a common exception: most casinos allow only one card on each split Ace and do not allow re-splitting Aces. The ability to double after splitting is another important rule variation. These rules differences affect the overall house edge and should factor into your table selection.
