Running Count
Definition
In card counting, the cumulative total as cards are dealt. In Hi-Lo: cards 2-6 = +1, 7-9 = 0, 10-A = -1. The running count must be converted to a true count for accurate bet sizing.
The running count is the raw, cumulative total maintained by a card counter as cards are dealt from the shoe. Each card that appears on the table receives a point value according to the chosen counting system, and the running count is updated continuously throughout the shoe.
In the Hi-Lo system, the most widely used counting method, cards are valued as follows: 2 through 6 equal +1, 7 through 9 equal 0, and 10 through Ace equal -1. The deck starts at a count of zero and is balanced, meaning counting through an entire deck returns to zero. As low cards appear, the count rises, indicating more high cards remain. As high cards appear, the count drops.
Maintaining an accurate running count requires concentration and practice. Experienced counters group cards in pairs (a +1 and a -1 cancel each other out) to simplify the mental arithmetic. In a fast-paced casino environment with multiple players at the table, cards appear quickly, and mistakes can be costly. Most counters practice at home with a single deck, aiming to count through all 52 cards in under 30 seconds with perfect accuracy.
The running count alone is sufficient for single-deck games but must be converted to a true count for multi-deck games. In a single-deck game, a running count of +4 is very significant because it represents a substantial shift in the remaining card composition. In a 6-deck game, the same running count of +4 is much less meaningful because many more cards remain to dilute the effect.

A technique used in blackjack to track the ratio of high to low cards remaining in the deck. When the count is favorable (many high cards left), the player increases bets. Not illegal but casinos can ban counters. The Hi-Lo system is the most popular method.
True CountIn card counting, the running count divided by the estimated number of decks remaining. The true count provides a more accurate measure of the player's advantage than the running count alone. A true count of +2 or higher typically indicates a player edge.
