Surrender

Definition

A blackjack option that lets you forfeit half your bet and give up your hand before playing it. Available in some casinos. Late surrender (after dealer checks for blackjack) is more common. Optimal on hard 16 vs dealer 9, 10, or Ace.

Surrender is a blackjack option that allows you to give up your hand and forfeit half your bet before playing it out. It is one of the most underused options in blackjack, yet it is very valuable in specific situations where your hand has a very low probability of winning.

There are two types of surrender. Late surrender, the more common variant, is available after the dealer checks for blackjack. Early surrender is available before the dealer checks and is significantly more valuable for the player (reducing the house edge by about 0.6%), which is why it is extremely rare in modern casinos.

Basic strategy calls for late surrender in the following situations: surrender hard 16 (but not 8-8) against dealer 9, 10, or Ace; and surrender hard 15 against dealer 10. Some rule sets also suggest surrendering hard 17 against dealer Ace. In these specific spots, your probability of winning is so low that saving half your bet is the mathematically optimal play.

Many players never surrender because it feels like giving up. But consider hard 16 against a dealer 10: you will win this hand only about 23% of the time. By surrendering, you save 50 cents on every dollar bet compared to the approximately 54 cents you expect to lose by playing the hand. Over thousands of hands, using surrender correctly adds up to meaningful savings.
