Stand
Definition
To keep your current hand and take no more cards in blackjack. Basic strategy generally says to stand on hard 17+, and on hard 12-16 when the dealer shows 2-6 (expecting the dealer to bust).
Standing in blackjack means keeping your current hand total and declining any additional cards. Once you stand, your hand is final, and the dealer proceeds to the next player or reveals their hole card.
Basic strategy dictates standing in several clear situations. Always stand on hard 17 or higher, as the risk of busting outweighs any potential improvement. Always stand on hard 13 through 16 when the dealer shows 2 through 6, because the dealer is likely to bust with these weak upcards. Always stand on soft 19 or soft 20.
Standing on a hard 12 through 16 against a weak dealer upcard is a defensive play. You are not standing because your hand is strong. You are standing because the dealer's probability of busting (approximately 35-42% with upcards of 2 through 6) makes it better to avoid the risk of busting yourself. If the dealer does make a hand, you lose, but mathematically the standing strategy produces better results over time.
In land-based casinos, you signal a stand by waving your hand horizontally over your cards in face-up games or sliding your cards under your chips in hand-held games. The decision to stand is often psychologically difficult when you have a low total like 12 or 13, but trusting the mathematics of basic strategy is what separates disciplined players from those who play by gut feeling.

Basic Strategy (Blackjack)The mathematically optimal play for every possible hand combination in blackjack, determined by computer simulation. Following basic strategy reduces the house edge to approximately 0.5%. It covers when to hit, stand, double, split, and surrender.
BustWhen a hand's total exceeds 21 in blackjack, resulting in an automatic loss. The dealer must hit until reaching 17+, so the dealer can also bust. The house edge partly comes from the fact that if both player and dealer bust, the player still loses.
